5.16.2010 | Softball
For the second consecutive season, junior pitcher/designated player Sara Bowen has been named  First Team All-Atlantic Region.   Bowen's performance this season in the circle and at the plate helped lead the Lynx to a 27-15 record, breaking the regular season record for wins and earning the Lynx  their second straight berth in the SCAC Championships.

5.16.2010 | Softball
Junior pitcher Cindy Bitters has been named to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship team for 2010.  Bitters, an Honorable Mention All-SCAC selection in 2009, underwent Tommy John surgery in August, and did not begin pitching until January.   Her aggressive training schedule and hard work paid off, as she was able to return to the Lynx pitching staff by early March, going 4-0 on the season with a 2.21 ERA, fanning 42 hitters in 31 innings of work.

First-team All-SCAC performers Sara Bowen and Kelli Zomer are among 10 Lynx named to the All-SCAC Softball Team, released today by the SCAC Office.  The Lynx finished with a school-record 27 regular season wins, a 27-15 overall record and second place finish in the SCAC East Division.  In addition, Allison Conn was named to the Second Team, while Jennifer Whatley, Rebekah Moore, Armanda Venezia, Olivia Ryan, Elise Suna, Chelsea Peters and Megan Matthews received Honorable Mention honors.

Rhodes dropped a 6-4 decision to Trinity this afternoon in Conway, AR in the opening round of the SCAC Championships.  Rhodes will play Southwestern Saturday at 1pm in an elimination game.  Due to inclement weather, the game will be played at Conway High School.  Hendrix is making every effort to ensure that live stats are available.  Please check the Hendrix site for any changes to the game time and for live stats.

Due to predicted inclement weather in Conway, the schedule for the SCAC Softball Championships had been changed for Friday.   Rhodes will play Trinity at Noon on Friday, rather than 2:00pm.  For updated schedules, live stats, and all related information, go to http://www.hendrix.edu/Athletics/.

Junior Sara Bowen became Rhodes' single season strikeout leader on Sunday, April 3 when she struck out Centre's Regina Sena in the third inning for her 157th strikeout of the season.  Bowen broke the mark of 156 set by Dana Bartolomei '08 during the 2007 season.  Bowen currently has 160 strikeouts on the season in 112 innings pitched.

After splitting Saturday's doubleheader, Rhodes bounced back with a pair of wins on Sunday over Centre, taking the first game 8-2 and the second game 6-2.  Sara Bowen pitched 6 shutout innings in game 1, giving up just 3 hits to improve to 11-5 on the season, while Kelli Zomer and Allison Conn each had 3 hits to pace the offense.  Chelsea Peters picked up her 10th win of the season in game 2, giving up just 6 hits while striking out 8, and Zomer again led the offense with 2 singles and a home run.  Rhodes is 23-13 and 4-8 in the SCAC, and returns to action this weekend with a 4-game series against Sewanee.

Rhodes and Centre split a SCAC doubleheader this afternoon in Danville, KY, with the Lynx taking the first game 10-2 before falling to the Colonels 2-0 in the second game.  Rhodes is 21-13 on the season and 2-8 in the SCAC, while Centre is 15-15 overall and 5-5 in the SCAC.  The two teams will meet tomorrow at Noon in another doubleheader.

After losing the first game 5-0, Sara Bowen and the Rhodes Softball team bounced back in game two to defeat the Christian Brothers Lady Bucs 5-4 Tuesday night, in a game played at Collierville High School.  Bowen went the distance to earn the win in the circle, striking out 12 and giving up just 2 earned runs, and capped off the evening with a dramatic 3-run, walk off home run to give the Lynx the 5-4 win.

Rhodes dropped a pair of SCAC softball games this afternoon to Birmingham Southern, by scores of 3-0 and 10-7.  In game 1, the Panthers scored 1 in the first and 2 in the 4th, while Ronni Ferris kept the Lynx bats in check for the second straight day, leading the Panthers to a 3-0 win.   In game 2, the Lynx bats came alive, pounding out 13 hits, but could not pull off the win, as the Lynx stranded 11 runners on base and fell 10-7.  Sara Bowen had 3 hits to pace the Lynx, while Allison Conn, Rebekah Moore, and Armanda Venezia each had a pair of hits.  Rhodes is off next weekend, before returning to action on Tuesday, April 6 against cross-town rival Christian Brothers.

Panther hurler Ronni Ferris tossed a perfect game and Birmingham Southern pounded out 16 hits to win game 1 8-0 in 5 innings. In game 2, Lynx pitcher Sara Bowen and the Panthers' Tori Harris held the bats at bay for most of the game, as the Panthers edged the Lynx 3-2 in 10 innings.

After suffering their first SCAC loss since the 2007 season, the Depauw Tigers came back with a vengeance today, sweeping a pair of games from Rhodes by scores of 20-0 and 4-1.  The Tigers outhit the Lynx 16-3 in game 1 and took advantage of 8 walks by Lynx pitchers en route to the 5-inning mercy rule win.   Rhodes bounced back to make game 2 competitive, as the score was tied 1-1 after 3 innings, but the Tigers scored 2 unearned runs in the 4th and added an insurance run in the 5th for the 4-1 win.  The games started late due to inclement weather, and game 2 was called after 5 innings because of darkness.  Allison Conn was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run scored in game 2, reaching base in all 3 plate appearances to lead the Lynx.

Chris Conkell

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.
