On the NCAA website, Rhodes student-athlete Claire Cordua ’13 shares her story of surviving a stroke and having plans to play on the Rhodes volleyball team this fall.

The story begins, “It was a carefree summer day last July as Claire Cordua headed to the beach with her boyfriend near her hometown of San Diego, Calif. But, as she drove down the road, that all quickly changed for the rising freshman women′s volleyball player that would soon be attending Rhodes College.”

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced its Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll today for the 2010 spring term and a record 1,090 student-athletes made the list. Since its inception in the fall of 1997, just over 16,600 male and female student-athletes have been recognized for their contributions inthe classroom.  Rhodes ranked 3rd overall this spring for the total number of students with a 3.25 GPA and higher.

On a windy Thursday night at North Central College’s Dr. Keeler Invitational, sophomore Taylor Stephens (Southlake, TX), shattered the school record in the 10,000m run, running a 36:38.54 to place seventh in a very competitive field.

At the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College, junior Andrew Maryott (East Dennis, MA) and sophomore Evan Nelsen (Greenville, SC) represented the Rhodes College Track & Field team, giving the program much to be proud of.

5.15.10 | Women's Golf
Stephanie Mingos closed with a final round 76 (+3 on a par 73 course) to finish in a tie for 5th in the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at the Mission Inn and Resort in Howey in the Hills, Florida.  Starting the final round 7 strokes off the lead, Stephanie shot an ever par 37 on the first nine, which included two birdie's.  She closed with a 39 on the second nine to shoot 76, the 2nd best score of the final round.

Prior to the National Golf Coaches Association banquet, team Mingos gathered in front of the Mission Inn and Resort for a group shot.  Standing from L to R:  Steve and Maria Mingos (Dad and Mom), Stephanie, Kristina Mingos (sister), Nicole Jones (2010 Co-Captain), Nancy and Coach Clary.

At the banquet Stephanie was selected to the NGCA All Great Lakes team, as well as to the Honorable Mention All American team.  "After suffering a severe back injury in the fall and not playing golf from September 15-December 15, for Stephanie to be sitting in 8th place in the NCAA tournament and be contending for the national championship is truly amazing," said Coach Clary.

The Rhodes College Soccer office is pleased to announce the addition of Jimmy Tharpe to the Men’s and Women’s coaching staff for the 2010 season.  “We are excited to add Jimmy to our coaching staff, said women's head coach Joe Vari.  "I had the opportunity to not only coach Jimmy but I also worked with him while at Lynchburg and I know that he will bring a great deal of knowledge and passion to both programs.”

On a windy, tough El Campeon golf course at the Mission Inn Resort, Stephanie Mingos shot a 79 and stands three strokes off the lead after the 1st round of the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.   Paige Caldwell (Methodist University) and Natalie Matuszak (St. Mary's, IN) share the first round lead with a 1st round score of 76.

Chris Conkell
Baseball
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.
