The final GOLF WORLD/NIKE COACHES POLL for the Fall Season was released and shows our Rhodes Men’s Golf Team ranked #10.  “We got off to great start this year winning our first tournament, the Transylvania Fall Invitational, finishing tied for 3rd at our Rhodes College Collegiate Classic, and 3rd at the Birmingham-Southern Shootout” said coach Bill Cochran.

Doug Gordon and Stephanie Mingos, two of the Lynx top golfers, woke up early Saturday morning to support their friends in the St. Jude Marathon and Half-Marathon.  Athletic Director and Women’s Golf Coach Mike Clary, and his wife, Nancy, were on hand to cheer for their children, Brian ’01 and Julie ’04, in the half-marathon.  Head Men’s Golf Coach Bill Cochran was also up early to cheer for his sister, Bonnie, his nephew, Chris, and son-in-law, Darrison.  Rhodes Ass’t Director of Special Gifts, Hud Andrews, was also at the 8 mile mark to cheer on fellow staff, friends and alums.

10.21.2009 | Men's Golf
Sophomore Shay Womack fired rounds of 69-74 = 143 to finish tied for sixth at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.  This is Shay’s  second consecutive top 10 finish as he finished 3rd at the Birmingham Southern Shootout . Sophomore Bill Bazzel finished tied for 14th with scores of 70-76 = 146.

A disappointing final round of 308 dropped Rhodes to a 3rd place finish in the Birmingham Southern Shootout played at the Robert Trent Jones – Valley Course in Birmingham, AL.

9.28.2009 | Men's Golf
The Rhodes Lynx Men's Golf Team, ranked #2 in the country in the Division III Golfstat rankings, are tied with the #1 ranked team, Huntingdon (AL), after 36 holes of the Birmingham Southern Shootout being contested at the Oxmoor Valley Golf Club.   The Lynx Shay Womack, a sophomore from the Lovett School in Atlanta, is leading the tournament after posting rounds of 74-71 (145).

9.12.09 | Men's Golf
    Sophomore Scott Wallace shot a team best second day round of 71, to lead the Rhodes Men's Golf team to a win at the Transylvania Invitational in Lexington, KY. Sophomore Bill Bazzell shot a two day total of 146 to finish third overall, as the Lynx rallied to defeat Centre College by two shots. Wallace finished 5th overall with a two day total of 148.

“We saved our best golf for the last day of the tournament with a team score of 300, but it just wasn’t enough to catch Oglethorpe University," said Coach Bill Cochran, as the Lynx finish 2nd in the SCAC Golf Championship played at Tunica National Golf Club in Tunica , Mississippi.

Trailing by 13 shots after the first two rounds, the margin was reduced to 4 shots going to the final hole. “We gave them a big scare," said Coach Cochran! The final round charge was led by Bill Bazzel shooting a one over par 73 and Doug Gordon, who played the final nine holes in two under par to record a 74. These were the two low rounds on the final day under very adverse conditions. Bill’s three day total of 226 earned him the runner-up spot just one shot behind SCAC champion Scott Pugh of Oglethorpe

3.24.09 | Men's Golf
From Bill Cochran, Rhodes Golf Coach

We had a great tournament at the Jekyll Island Collegiate finishing 5th out of 27 teams. The event was dominated by the top four Division III teams in the country. #1 ranked Huntingdon won the team title, followed by #2 Methodist, #3 Oglethorpe and #4 Illinois Wesleyan. However, Rhodes College was the best of the rest!

3.20.09 | Women's Golf, Men's Golf

On a brisk and windy day, the Lynx Women's Golf Team shot 358 and is tied for 10th out of 22 teams and the Lynx Men's Golf Team shot 309 and is tied for 11th out of 27 teams after the 1st round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate. Doug Gordon's 75 (37-38; tie 18th) and Bill Bazzel's 75 (36-39; tie 18th) led the men's team and Stephanie Mingos' 84 (40-44; tie 14th) led the women's team.

2.24.09 | Men's Golf
Scott Wallace posted a one-under 71 to pace the Lynx as the team shot a 2nd round total of 306 to place 2nd in the Huntingdon Invitational in Montgomery, Alabama. Huntingdon, ranked #1 in NCAA Division III Golf, shot a 293 team score in the final round to claim 1st place honors. The Lynx will play in the Calloway Collegiate on March 2-3 at Calloway Gardens.
