Mike DeGeorge has been named Rhodes Head Men’s Basketball Coach.  DeGeorge most recently served as the Head Basketball Coach at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he transformed the Cornell program from 3 wins in 2005-06 to 21 wins in 2008-09.  The 2008-09 Cornell squad captured the school’s first Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Championship and earned the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in fifteen years.  Coach DeGeorge was named the IIAC Coach of the Year in 2008-09.

Keuka College has selected Thad Phillips, assistant coach at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., to be its new head men’s basketball coach.

Phillips replaces Tom Flood, who announced his retirement in March.

“We felt Thad was a perfect fit for Keuka College,” said Athletic Director Dave Sweet. “As a successful NCAA Division III student-athlete and coach, he knows the dedication and work ethic it takes to compete on this level and understands the role that the term ‘student’ means in student-athlete.”

Herb Hilgeman, who just completed his 34th year as the Rhodes head basketball coach, announced today will retire from his position at Rhodes effective May 15.  Herb is the dean of college coaches in the Memphis area having served as the Lynx head basketball coach since 1976.

Jackson, Mississippi ~ Rhodes College lost to Austin College in the first round of the SCAC Tournament tonight, 68-74.  The underdog Lynx put a first round scare into the Roos as the contest was close throughout.  The game was tied nine seperate occasions and wasn't decided until the final minutes.

Birmingham, Alabama ~ The Rhodes men’s basketball team dropped a SCAC game to Birmingham Southern tonight 58-92.  The Lynx could not overcome a hot Panther team who shot 44% from the three in the first half as they connected on 10 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc and 58% overall from the field in the first 20 minutes.

2.9.10 | Men's Basketball
Suwanee, Georgia ~ Rhodes Lynx senior men’s basketball player Reid Hamilton (Birmingham, AL) was chosen as the SCAC Player of the Week for Week 11.  Reid, a 6’6 forward, averaged a double-double in two games against SCAC foes.  On Friday, February 5th, Reid notched a game high 15 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.  He also handed out 2 assists and blocked 2 shots on the evening.  His play helped the Lynx capture a 60-44 victory.  In the Sunday game, Hamilton scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds (including 6 offensive).  He connected on 7 of 15 shooting (46%) on the day as well.  Reid is currently averaging 15 points per game to lead the Lynx and rank him 4th in the SCAC.  His 6.5 rebounds per game is second for the Lynx and ranks 8th in the SCAC.

Memphis, Tennessee ~ Rhodes College could not overcome a slow starting first half in route to a 72-86 home loss against Oglethorpe University today.  Rhodes shot just 37% in the first half, and their defense was porous allowing Oglethorpe to shoot 55% in the half.

Memphis, Tennessee ~ The Rhodes Men’s Basketball team sent off its five seniors out in style on Senior Night with a hard fought 60-44 victory over Sewanee.  The five seniors, Larry Cunningham, JR. (St. Charles, MO), Chris Eberle (Cincinnati, OH), Reid Hamilton (Birmingham, AL), Andyshea Saberioon (Houston, TX) and Andrew Sillyman (Cordova, TN), accounted for 36 of the Lynx 60 points.

This past Friday evening, prior to the Rhodes vs Millsaps men’s basketball game, Herb Hilgeman was recognized for becoming the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference all-time winningest men’s basketball coach. On November 16, 2009 Rhodes defeated Principia 89-51 to earn Coach Hilgeman his 464th victory. Cliff Garrison, the legendary former head coach at Hendrix, held the previous record of 463 wins.

Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.
Chris Conkell
Baseball
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
