The Rhodes Athletic Department celebrated the accomplishments of all their student athletes and teams last night during their annual athletic banquet held in McCallum Ballroom.  Seniors Andy Boucher (Baseball/Football) and Becca Clarin (Basketball/Soccer) were named the Walter E. Gay and Rebecca Rish Award Winners, which is awarded to the top senior female athlete and the top senior male athlete in the athletic department.

Lucas Stockhausen connected on a 42 yard field goal in overtime as the Rhodes defense held on a goal line stand in overtime to preserve a 19-16 win against the University of the South, at Fargason Field on Saturday, November 14th.

 Rhodes lost a 37-10 decision to SCAC leader Centre College, in Danville, KY on October 31st.  Centre jumped out to a 30-10 halftime lead, capitalizing on a 58 yard fumble return for a touchdown in the 1st quarter and the Colonels returned a blocked punt 24 yards for another touchdown in the second quarter.

Three Lynx first half turnovers led to 14 Birmingham Southern points; as Birmingham Southern jumped out to a 34-3 halftime lead and held on to beat Rhodes 51-17 on the campus of Birmingham Southern, on Saturday, September 26th.

The hole that Rhodes dug for itself was too deep to climb out of.
                Five fumbles-- two which led to 10 Trinity points in the first quarter--a defense that had to battle Trinity’s 43 minutes of possession and a failure to close a deficit gap when it could, stymied Rhodes during a 40-19 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to the Tigers on Saturday at Fargason Field.

    Rhodes rallied from an early 7-0 deficit to score 33 unanswered points to defeat Haskell Indian Nations University  47-16 at Lawrence, KS, on September 12th.The Lynx racked up 442 yards of total offense to post their second consecutive victory. Sophomore running back Nico Lagueruela scored on a 66 yard touchdown run in the second quarter and finished the day with 102 yards on 8 carries.

2009 will be the 13th season for Lynx Head Coach Joe White. In 2008 Rhodes had the best defense in the SCAC, finishing 1st in total defense, rush defense and pass defense.  The Lynx lose seven starters on the defense, but are returning 8 offensive starters and Coach White believes this groups experience will pay dividends “My biggest concern is losing the two best defensive players in the SCAC,” said White.

Senior Rhodes linebackers Mason Mosby and Desmond Hendricks were named to the D3football.com 2008 All-South Region Team. Mosby was named to the 2nd team and Hendricks was named to the third team.

Mason Mosby, a 6-0, 210-pound senior linebacker from Hernando, Miss., was named the 2008 SCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Mason led the SCAC in both tackles (118) and tackles per game (13.1) this season. Through the end of the regular season, he was second in the nation in both solo and total tackles per game. The SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in Week 2, Mason finished the season with 66 solo and 52 assisted tackles and forced three fumbles. He also had four sacks, seven tackles for loss and two interceptions.

Athletes of the Week
Chris Conkell
Baseball
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.

Rhodes College
