5.06.2010 | Baseball
Senior 2B Andy Boucher and junior RHP Hunter Chandler have been named Academic All-District by ESPN The Magazine and the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Boucher was named 1st team All-District, carrying a 3.92 GPA in neuroscience.  Boucher was the only player in the SCAC to make the 1st team.  Chandler was a 2nd team selection, carrying a 3.97 GPA in economics and business administration.

Brooks Royer, a senior from Houston, TX, has been named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team for the 2010 baseball season.  Royer was the team captain and everyday starting shortstop for the Lynx this season.  He hit .275 in 36 games played this year.

The Rhodes Athletic Department celebrated the accomplishments of all their student athletes and teams last night during their annual athletic banquet held in McCallum Ballroom.  Seniors Andy Boucher (Baseball/Football) and Becca Clarin (Basketball/Soccer) were named the Walter E. Gay and Rebecca Rish Award Winners, which is awarded to the top senior female athlete and the top senior male athlete in the athletic department.

Junior catcher Chris Conkell and freshman designated hitter Matt Burnick have been named to the SCAC All-Tournament team.  Conkell was one of three players who were unanimous selections.  Conkell hit .412 (7-17) with 2 doubles, 5 RBIs, and scored 5 runs during the tournament, while Burnick hit .375 (6-16) with a double, home run, 4 RBIs, and scored 3 runs.

Juniors Hunter Chandler, Brent Lindsey, and Matt Gilbert have been named 1st Team All-SCAC for the 2010 baseball season.  This is the first time Chandler and Gilbert have been named All-Conference.  This is the 3rd time Lindsey has been named All-Conference, he was a a 1st Team selection in 2008 and honorable mention in 2009.

The Rhodes College baseball team defeated DII Christian Brothers University 5-4 this afternoon at Buc Field.  Rhodes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after 2, and stretched the lead 3-1 after 4.  The Bucs tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the 6th.  Junior DH Austin Marcum broke the tie in the top of 7th with an RBI single scoring junior Matt Gilbert.  Senior Max Gertz picked up his first victory of the season and junior Hunter Chandler collected his 5th save of the year, before the game was called in the bottom of the 7th due to darkness.  Rhodes is now 21-9 on the season.

Coach Jeff Cleanthes, the head coach of the Rhodes College baseball team, collected his 200th career win this afternoon in a 10-5 victory over DePauw University in Greencastle, IN.  Coach Cleanthes has completely revamped the Rhodes baseball program since he took over in the fall of 2003.  Before taking over at Rhodes, Coach Cleanthes spent 3 years at Keuka College, in Keuka Park, NY.  In his 9+ years as a head coach, Coach Cleanthes has a career coaching record of 200-174.

The Rhodes College baseball team defeated DePauw University 10-5 this afternoon in Greencastle, IN.  Rhodes jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first, and stretched the lead to 10-1 after five.  Depauw answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th, but senior Max Gertz was able to stop the Tiger rally after relieving Lynx starter Hunter Chandler with outs in the 7th.  Chandler picked up his 2nd victory of the year, to improve to 20-7 and 6-1 in SCAC play.

The Rhodes College baseball team finished their 3 game conference series with Centre College in Danville, KY this afternoon with a 11-8 victory.  Both teams got the offense going early, with Rhodes leading 8-5 after 2.  Junior RF Matt Gilbert highlighted the 7 run Rhodes 2nd with a 3 run shot to right field.  Centre would tie the game 8-8 in the bottom of the 5th, before Rhodes countered with a single run in the 6th.  Junior C Chris Conkell gave the Lynx some breathing room with a 2 run home run in the top of the ninth.  Junior Taylor Babich picked up his 3rd victory of the year as freshman Jackson Baker earned his 1st save.  Rhodes is now 19-7 and 5-1 in SCAC play.

The Rhodes Baseball team split their games this afternoon with Centre College, winning 4-2, while dropping the second 5-0 in Danville, KY.  In the first game, the Lynx trailed 2-1 in the top of the seventh with 1 out when junior Austin Marcum hit a pinch hit home run to deep right center to tie the game and then junior DH Brent Lindsey followed up with a two run shot to left center three hitters later to put the Lynx up 4-2.  Sophomore Austin Carden picked up his 5th win of the season and junior Hunter Chandler collected his 4th save of the season.  In the second game Rhodes got 2 hit by the Centre pitching staff, as freshmen Tony Pikos took the loss for the Lynx.  Rhodes is now 18-7 on the year and 3-1 in SCAC play.

Brent Lindsey, a junior 1B/DH from Cordova, TN has been named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week for games played between March 15th - 21st.  Lindsey hit .480 on the week with a home run, 5 doubles, 8 runs scored, and 7 RBIs.

The Rhodes College baseball team completed the weekend sweep of conference foe Oglethorpe University this afternoon with a 7-6 11 inning victory at Stauffer Field.  Rhodes trailed 3-1 after 3, tied the game at 3 in the 4th, and then fell behind again until they tied in the bottom of the ninth.  The Lynx won the game on a Chris Conkell single in the bottom of the 11th.  Sophomore Austin Carden picked up the win after coming out the pen in the 10th.  Rhodes is now 17-6 on the year and 3-0 in SCAC play.

Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.
Chris Conkell
Baseball
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
