Charlie Wagner Earns 2009 MVP Award

4/29/2010 7:06:34 PM

During the last week of classes each year over 350 Rhodes varsity athletes and their coaches and support staff gather together to celebrate the accomplishments of the department over the year.  This year's athletics awards banquet highlighted each team's success with a player from each team presenting one of their teammates with the program's MVP for 2009-2010.  The event's master of ceremonies this year was field hockey's own Meghan Cullen.  Two standing ovations highlighted the event, one for the graduating seniors who have dedicated four years to athletics at Rhodes and the other for long time Lynx basketball coach Herb Hilgeman, who retires next month after 34 years on staff.  The Lynx finished 4th of 12 institutions in the all sports President Trophy race, led by field hockey, men's track, and women's track who all captured SCAC titles in 2009-2010.

Senior Kristen Lee presented Charlie Wagner with the 2009 Rhodes Field Hockey MVP, which was the first time in head Coach Jane Wells' tenure that a non-senior was selected by her teammates as the MVP.  Charlie led the team consistently all season long, on and off the field, she was the glue that bonded the team together.  After leading the team to their best season yet in 2009, Charlie was tabbed with several post season honors including All Conference, All Region, and Third Team All American.  Charlie, along with teammate Meghan Cullen are the program's first All Americans in the team's 12 year history.  The team is excited to return a strong crew of 8 juniors to their senior season in 2010 but will miss the contributions of 4 seniors who will graduate on May 15th.  Meghan Cullen, Valerie Clarke, Sarah Crowley, and Kristen Lee have helped the team grow and develop in leaps and bounds during their careers at Rhodes, which were bookended by SCAC Championships in their freshman and senior years.  The Lynx will take the field on Saturday September 4th and Sunday September 5th in Newport News, VA as they open the season with regional matchups against Randolph Macon and powerhouse Christopher Newport.
