Washington University jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead and held on to defeat Rhodes 23-0 in a non-conference football game played in St. Louis, MO on Saturday, October 3rd.
Things looked good early for Rhodes as they took the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards on 13 plays before Lynx quarterback Brett Stoots was intercepted at the goal line by Washington University defensive back Tim Machan. Junior Lynx running back Matt Gilbert carried 8 times for 32 yards on the drive.
The Bears got on the board on a Jim O'Brien 2 yard touchdown run with 4:25 remaining in the 1st quarter. The next series Rhodes was unsuccessful on a fake punt attempt and the Bears capitalized on the field position. Washington University quarterback Steve Sherman connected with Easton Knott on a 27 yard touchdown pass and Washington University led Rhodes 14-0 with 1:12 to play in the 1st quarter.
Rhodes freshman place kicker Lucas Stockhausen was just short on a 54 yard field goal attempt on the last play of the first half as Rhodes trailed 14-0 at the half. The Bears extended their lead to 20-0 on a Greg Lachaud 1 yard touchdown run with 4:59 to play in the 3rd quarter.
The Lynx came right back after the Bear touchdown and marched 44 yards on 4 plays, only to have Stoots intercepted in the end zone again with 1:36 to play in the 3rd quarter. A late field goal with 3:20 to play in the game accounted for the final Bear margin of victory.
Gilbert finished the day with 61 yards on 19 carries and freshman wide receiver Jack Lartigue caught a career best 7 passes for 87 yards.
The Lynx fall to 2-3 overall and return home to face SCAC opponent DePauw University next Saturday at Fargason Field.
