The Rhodes Lynx women's swim team fell one point short to perennial SCAC power Sewanee, losing 48-47 Saturday at the Bartlett Recreation Center. Sewanee started the meet with a commanding victory in the 200 Medley Relay, before
Kelsey Wilson and
Megan May answered with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Freestyle with times of 2:01.24 and 2:03.66, respectively. For May, the time was a 3 second improvement upon her lifetime best which had been set just two weeks prior at the Tunica Invitational.
With minimal time to recover, Wilson swam the very next event, the 50 Freestyle, touching first in a time of 26.00 to give the Lynx an early lead of 13-12. Sewanee followed suit with a pair of victories in the 400 IM and 100 Butterfly, before Wilson was called on again in the 100 Freestyle. She touched first in a time of 56.24, and was joined in the points by
Megan May who placed 3rd with a time of 58.18.
Sewanee continued to dominate the stroke events by finishing 1-2 in the 100 Backstroke and Breaststroke, but the Lynx refused to back down, answering with a 1-2 finish of their own in the 500 Freestyle.
Gianna Salvucci touched first with a time of 5:25.38, while
Lauren Miller beat out the rest out the heat for second, with an unrested best time of 5:36.39.
The Lynx headed into the final two events of the afternoon trailing 45-34. The Rhodes 400 Free Relay, consisting of
Gianna Salvucci,
Susanna Kirby,
Megan May, and
Kathryn Campbell, kept slim hopes alive for the Lynx, winning in convincing fashion and pulling the score to 45-41, Sewanee's lead, going into the last event, the 1650 Freestyle.
Gianna Salvucci won the mile with a time of 18:53.54, but Sewanee managed to salvage the meet victory with Alix Kloster's 2nd place finish. Salvucci's time is the 4th fastest swum in the SCAC this year, to go along with her 2nd place SCAC ranking in the 500.
The Lynx are set to host Berry College and Hendrix College at 1:00 PM Saturday January 28th at the Bartlett Recreation Center. Senior Captains
Hannah Emery and
Gianna Salvucci will be honored before the meet for their huge contributions to the Lynx Swimming and Diving Program. Salvucci and Emery have combined to set 5 school records in their time at Rhodes, and look to close out the regular season with a pair of victories.
