MEMPHIS, TN – The Lynx traveled across the city on Saturday to compete at the University of Memphis Invitational. At the non-scoring meet, the men competed well – with many athletes placing among the top finishers in several events.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the meet belonged to junior Andrew Maryott (East Dennis, MA). His hammer throw of 170'3” (51.90m) shattered his previous personal best and the school record by fifteen feet. Only two feet from the national qualifying standard, Maryott's distance placed him fifth overall among some of the best throwers in Division I. Also competing in the discus and shot put, his respective throws of 150'9” (45.95m) and 44'11.5” (13.70m) netted him seventh place in both events.
Also having a breakthrough meet was junior Griffin Salzer (Beaufort, SC). In the javelin throw he uncorked several outstanding throws, the best of which garnered him second place honors with a distance of 177'6” (54.10m). It was a personal best performance by over twenty feet. In other field events, sophomore Alex Lippincott (Brookline, MA) returned to competition after taking a hiatus due to injury, placing fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6'.75” (1.85m). Senior Jeremy Moye (Ooltewah, TN) tied his season's best performance in the pole vault, clearing 13'3.5” (4.05m).
In the running events, the 400m dash saw Rhodes men comprise the majority of the field with six athletes in the race. Freshman Chris Hardy (Collierville, TN) led the way, placing sixth in an excellent time of 50.79. He was followed by freshman Dan Sutherland (Highland Park, TX), whose time of 51.44 placed him tenth. In eleventh and twelfth place were sophomore David Thomas (Baton Rouge, LA) and freshman Tyler Catterton, finishing in respective times of 51.67 and 52.39 seconds. Rhodes was also represented well in the 1,500m run. Sophomore Cody Beatty (Lewisville, TX) ran a season's best time of 4:06.28 to place fourth overall. Closely following him was freshman Michael Ascuitto (New Orleans, LA) in sixth place, crossing the line in 4:08.93. Senior co-captain Colin Johnson (Aledo, TX), sophomore Evan Nelsen (Greenville, SC), junior Robert McMillan (Signal Mountain, TN), and junior Chris Moore (Southlake, TX) finished in succession in eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleven place. In the 3,000m, freshman Matt Miller (Plano, TX) ran a strong race to place eighth in a time of 9:27.90. The hurdle events were exciting as senior Jeremy Moye (Ooltewah, TN) and freshman Stephen Bailey (Nashvile, TN) placed fifth and sixth in the 110m hurdles, and senior co-captain Anson Purdy (Wesfield, NJ) ran a season's best time of 55.63 in the 400m hurdles to finish in fifth place. In the last event of the day, the 4x400m relay team of Catterton, Hardy, junior Matt Jacobs (Houston, TX), and sophomore Dan Wolfe (Newton, MA) placed fifth, crossing the line in 3:33.50.
In all, it was a successful day for the Lynx who now begin their preparation for the SCAC Championships. Hosted by Hendrix College, Rhodes will travel down to Conway, AR to compete against conference rivals from ten other schools. Events start Friday April 23rd and conclude Saturday April 24th.
