Rhodes rallied from a four point deficit with 1:38 to play and held on to defeat Millsaps 66-64 in the SAA title game played in Jackson, MS on Sunday, February 24th. Trailing 61-57 with 1:38 to play, junior guard
Lauren Avant (Memphis,TN) took over the game.
Avant scored 6 points on three layups in a matter of 44 seconds to put Rhodes up 63-61 with 54 seconds remaining. After another defensive stop sophomore guard
Sarah Johnson (Little Rock, AR) was fouled and hit two free throws to extend the Lynx lead to 63-61 with 4.4 seconds to play. Millsaps would hit a late three point field goal to cut the lead to 65-64 with 1.6 seconds remaining, but another Avant free throw iced the game.
For the day Avant scored 30 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and had 4 steals. She was named the tournament MVP and Johnson, who had a career high 12 assists, was named to the All-Tournament team. "What a gutsy perfromance by my basketball team," said Lynx Coach
Matt Dean. "We beat a great team, on their home floor before an awesome crowd with great atmoshere. I am so proud of my kids."
The Lynx finish the regular season at 24-3 and will await word tomorrow on whether or not they receive a bid to the D-III NCAA Tournament.
