Lynx Wrap Up In Cocoa Beach With Sweep

3/17/2010 4:17:09 PM

Rhodes wrapped up its Spring Break trip to Cocoa Beach with a pair of wins over Delaware Valley this morning, by scores of 5-1 and 8-2, completing an undefeated 6-0 record on the trip.  Rebekah Moore led the Lynx offense all day, going 5 for 7 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI, and reached base in 7 of her 8 plate appearances on the day.  Chelsea Peters picked up the win in game 1, giving up just 1 hit and allowing an unearned run to improve to 9-2 on the season.  Sara Bowen struck out 11 and gave up 6 hits in game 2, improving to 7-2 on the season.

Rhodes jumped on the board first in game 1, with 3 singles in the first inning.  Kelli Zomer led off with a single off the glove of the Aggie first baseman, and after a fielder's choice by Megan Matthews, Allison Conn singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  That gave Moore the opportunity to start her day of terrorizing Aggie pitchers, as she laced an RBI double off the top of the wall in center to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 5th, when the Lynx picked up 4 runs on 4 hits, assisted by 3 walks from Aggie pitchers.  Zomer walked to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on Conn's second single of the game, bringing Moore to the plate with 2 runners on.   Moore delivered a towering line-drive over the center-field fence for a 3-run home run, giving the Lynx a 4-0 lead.  Elise Suna singled with 2 outs, then consecutive walks to Armanda Venezia and Katie Stich loaded the bases for Jennifer Whatley.   Whatley's grounder to the left side was stopped in the hole by the Aggie shortstop, but there was no play to be made, allowing Suna to score on the RBI single and give the Lynx a 5-0 lead.

Peters was dominant in the circle, facing the minimum number of hitters through 6 innings.  An Aggie single in the 5th was quickly erased when Moore threw out the runner attempting to steal.  Two Rhodes errors in the 7th ruined Peters attempt at her 5th shutout of the season, but the Lynx escaped the inning giving up just one run.

Peters struck out 5 and gave up just 1 hit and an unearned run, facing just 2 hitters over the minimum, improving her record to 9-2 on the season.  In addition to Moore's 3 for 4, 4 RBI performance, the Lynx pounded out 8 other hits, led by Whatley and Conn with 2 each.

The Lynx wasted no time jumping on the Aggies in game 2, as Zomer led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a passed ball.  After a single and stolen base by Matthews, Conn delivered a 2-run single to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead.  After a walk to Moore, Bowen came through with an RBI single to give Rhodes a 3-0 lead after 1 inning.

Rhodes added 2 more runs in the 4th, courtesy of a leadoff double from Suna and RBI single from Olivia Ryan.  Ryan would later score on an RBI single from Matthews to give the Lynx a 5-0 lead after 4 innings.

Moore connected for her second home run of the day to lead off the 5th and stretch the Lynx lead to 6-0, but the Aggies picked up 2 runs in the bottom half of the 6th inning, courtesy of a 2-run home run from Greer McComas, to cut the lead to 6-2.  Rhodes quickly answered in the top of the 7th, on consecutive singles from Conn and Moore to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Bowen lined a single to center that skipped past the Aggie centerfielder to the wall, allowing Conn and pinch-runner Armanda Venezia to score and give the Lynx an 8-2 advantage.

Bowen retired the Aggies in order in the 7th to seal the win and improve to 7-2 on the season, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 11.  Moore finished 2 for 3 with a home run, while Matthews, Conn and Bowen each had a pair of hits to lead the Lynx offensively.

Rhodes improves to 18-4, and will bring a 15-game winning streak into this weeken's crucial conference series against 2-time defending SCAC Champion Depauw.  The teams will square off Saturday and Sunday with a doubleheader each day.
