BLOOMINGTON, IL – The Women's Track & Field Team had an excellent showing at the Keck Ecumenical Meet hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University, placing 2nd out of 22 scoring teams, trailing only the host school, and placing ahead of such Midwest Division III powers as Monmouth College, Carthage College, and Mid-south rival Washington University in St. Louis.
The field event athletes had a particularly noteworthy day with two individuals capturing first place honors. Senior Kim Tryon (Gulf Breeze, FL) won the pole vault with a jump of 11'1.75”, only 4 inches under the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In similar fashion, senior co-captain Julia Goss (St. Louis, MO) beat out 29 competitors to win the long jump with a distance of 17'7.50”, only 2.75 inches away from the NCAA standard. Triple jumpers freshman Sam Specht (St. Petersburg, FL) and junior Jessie Ormand (Hammond, LA) both had strong performances, posting distances of 34'11” and 34'1.50”, good for 5th and 7th place respectively.
The running events saw multiple top ten finishes in both the sprints and the distance races. Goss, scoring more valuable points for the Lynx, placed 3rd out of 38 runners in the 200m dash with a time of 26.90. In the 800m junior Molly Buck (Austin, TX) and senior co-captain Cybil Covic (Cordova, TN) finished within a second of each other to place 4th and 6th in 2:22.55 and 2:23.09. The 1 mile run was an exciting race with junior Anna Johnson (Birmingham, AL) outkicking a competitor on the final straightaway to place 7th with a time of 5:21.21. Junior Marianne Kirk (River Forest, IL) also had an outstanding race, setting a career personal record of 5:30.20. The 55m hurdles saw both Buck and Ormand post excellent times, placing 3rd and 5th in times of 8.72 and 8.89 respectively.
In the relay events, the Distance Medley Relay of junior Kelsey Dudziak (Williamstown, MA), Specht, sophomore Caroline Webster (Brunswick, ME), and Covic placed 2nd in a time of 12:51.81, 28 seconds ahead of the 3rd place team of Elmhurst College. In the 4x400m the team of Buck, Specht, freshman Megan Lee (Castro Valley, CA), and Goss ran a very impressive 4:05.49 to place 2nd overall out of 21 teams.
The Women's Track & Field team looks to continue performing at a high level when they travel to Greencastle, IN the 20th of February for the DePauw Classic. Look for the squad to post some more very impressive times and marks against some of the best competition in Division III Track & Field.
