Seniors Greg Cook, Colin Johnson and Anson Purdy have been elected captains of the Men's Track & Field program for the 2009-2010 Indoor and Outdoor season.
Cook, an Economics major and English minor from Bellaire, TX, has been a perennial presence on the 4x400m relay; the team of Cook, John Mervin, Anson Purdy and Cory Dardenne came agonizingly close to breaking the school record and qualifying for the NCAA Championships last season. This year Cook looks to lead the relay to a school record and a berth into the national meet. A multi talented athlete, he placed second in both the javelin and triple jump at the SCAC Championships and will be a key component of this year's team as they seek to improve upon their third place finish at the conference meet.
Colin Johnson, who spent last spring semester studying abroad in Estonia and Russia, rejoins the team for his senior year. Also named the 2009 Cross Country captain, Johnson, an International Studies major from Aledo, TX, brings his leadership abilities to a young team that is seeking to have their best season in recent years. A very dedicated and hard worker, Colin leads by example and looks to have a strong senior year as one of three Lynx steeplechasers.
Anson Purdy, an International Studies major and Religious Studies minor from Westfield, NJ enters his senior year as a member of the 4x400m relay and looks to qualify for the National Championships in the 400m hurdles for the first time. His time of 55.59 is only just over a second away from the provisional standard. Excited for the season to start, Purdy has his eyes on the future with hopes of leading the team to a first place podium finish at the SCAC Championship.
These three seniors – Cook, Johnson, and Purdy – head a talented squad of athletes that looks to accomplish big goals this year. These three individuals' commitment and hard work over their past three seasons as well as their leadership abilities will form the cornerstone of the 2009-2010 Track & Field program. With such strong captains guiding the team, the Rhodes Lynx are looking forward to the season ahead.
