Rhodes opened the 2009 SCAC season with a pair of victories over the Colonels of Centre College this afternoon, by scores of 9-0 and 5-1.  Sophomore Cindy Bitters improved her record to 5-2 in the circle in game 1, tossing a 2-hit shutout, while sophomore Sara Bowen improved to 5-1 on the season, notching 11 strikeouts along the way.  Allison Conn and Kelli Zomer each had 4 hits on the day to pace the Lynx offense.

Rhodes got on the board first in game one, when Zomer led off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Caroline Cooper.  After a single from Conn, Cooper would score on an error to give the Lynx a 2-0 lead after one. 

The Lynx added 2 more in the 3rd, when Conn led off with a walk, followed by a single by Rebekah Moore.   Conn would score on a single from Elise Suna, and Bitters helped her own cause with an RBI single to score pinch runner Ashlyn Chandler.

Zomer led off the Lynx 4th with a walk, and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored on a single from Conn.  Moore then delivered a 2-run home run, giving the Lynx a 7-0 lead after 4 innings. 

With one out in the bottom of the 6th, Suna doubled to right, scoring Conn and Chandler to make the score 9-0 and end the game.  Bitters struck out 6 and walked 2, earning her 5th win  of the season with a 2-hit shutout.  Conn was 3 for 3 with an RBI, whille Moore, Suna, and Zomer each had 2 hits to pace the Lynx offense.

Rhodes again scored first in the second game, loading the bases with no outs on a double from Sara Bowen, a walk to Suna, and a bunt single from Armanda Venezia.  Bowen and Suna scored on RBI groundouts from Jennifer Whatley and Chandler, giving the Lynx a 2-0 lead after 2 innings. 

Centre answered with a run of its own in the top of the 3rd, on a leadoff single by Lynda Stevenson and a 2-out RBI single from Taylor Childress.  Rhodes answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Cooper led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout by Moore. 

The Lynx added a pair of insurance runs in the 6th, on an RBI triple from Whatley and an RBI single from Chandler, giving the Lynx a 5-1 lead heading into the 7th,  Bowen finished off the Colonels in the 7th, with 3 strikeouts.  Bowen earned her 5th victory of the season, giving up 1 run on 6 hits with 11 strikeouts. 

Bowen and Zomer each had 2 hits in the game, while Chandler and Whatley each picked up a hit and 2 RBI to lead the Lynx offense.

Rhodes improves to 13-3 on the season and 2-0 in the SCAC.  The Lynx and Colonels will square off for 2 more games tomorrow beginning at Noon.

Chris Conkell

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Chris Conkell as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
The Lynx starting catcher managed a .458 batting average (22/48), 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored during the month of April. Durning this time, Conkell harnessed a 13 game hitting streak, hitting safely in every game for the month.
 
He was also named to the SCAC All-Tournament team after his performance in the conference tournament. His batting average of .412, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in the tournament led him to be one of three players who were unanimous selections to the team.
Stephanie Mingos
Women's Golf
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee has named junior Stephanie Mingos as the Student Athlete of the Month for April.
 
In the last month, Mingos put together an impressive campaign, winning three of her last four tournaments.  Her most recent victory came at the SCAC Championships, where Mingos captured Rhodes' first SCAC individual title since 2002, winning by a 6 stroke deficit over several of the nation's top players.
 
Her three day total of 14 over par is a new SCAC record, topping the previous mark of 17 over par by three-time SCAC champion Marisa Mauldin of Southwestern. Mingos' performance earned her first team All-SCAC and SCAC Player of the Year honors.
